Charisse Says

I am thankful for you, and TODAY's holiday gift to you!

I have so much to be thankful for in 2021. I’m particularly grateful for my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who keeps me whole, my family, my friends, my colleagues, my mental facilities, and my health.

I am thankful for the opportunity to journey with you and share with you.

I’m thankful for opportunities to be in person with people. I gave an in-person keynote session for my book last month. These ladies enjoyed it. As you can see, I’m smiling hard because this was my first in-person event for my book. I’m grateful for all the #WealthyGirls taking their wealth to the next level.

What are you thankful for this season?

Also, I am grateful for the ways in which members of the Charisse Says community are helping others build wealth. Charisse Says member Michael Davis, who is Head of Retirement Benefits at T. Rowe Price, became the host of T. Rowe Price’s Confident Conversations podcast last month. Michael has conversations that are designed to help you make informed decisions on your retirement and share their perspectives and provide you with tangible strategies on a range of retirement-related topics.

It's amazing. There’s plenty of nuggets. I am particularly fond of the episode “Become a Retirement Ready Woman,” which provides info on what women can do to feel more confident in their retirement. The experts, Jean Dunn and Judith Ward, discuss challenges women face and provide actionable steps to take control of their retirement and overall finances.

The episode is only 26 minutes, but you can listen to the first 5 and the last 10 to get what you need. If you do not have time, that’s fine - here are my biggest takeaways:

  •  “Start Now, Learn Later.” You will never have perfect information, but the important thing is to take action.

  • “Money is a tool for you to live out your dreams.” The more intentional you are about it now, you will probably be able to reach your dreams faster.

  • Reevaluate ‘risk.’ Men tend to see risk in a positive way while women tend to see risk in a negative way. Reframe your perception of risk.

  • Women outperform. Women tend to outperform men by 1% per year, which adds to returns heavily over time, in investing.

  • Alienation shouldn’t stop you. The financial services industry has alienated women for decades. Don’t let that stop you from securing the resources you need.

Finally, I want you to know that side hustling is a good thing. You might be thinking through how you can bring in additional money, take on an additional skill set, or embrace the independence that comes with a side hustle, especially ahead of the holiday and into the new year. Well a new study reveals How a Side Hustle Can Boost Performance at Your Job. The biggest takeaway from the study is that “side gigs can make people feel empowered - and thereby more productive at the office.” I have a side gig and I can attest to this study's conclusion; my side gig makes me more effective at my day job and vice versa. Consider whether a side gig is for you or inquire as to whether a friend or family member can benefit from a side gig too - don’t keep it to yourself.
