Happy 2018. Happy Martin Luther King Day. I’m back! I cherish days like this one because they force me to look at the intersection of race, class, and gender with fresh, critical eyes. America’s inequality problem continues to get uglier.
But, I refuse to throw up my hands in defeat. I want better for you and your family. I want better for me and my family. I want better for my community, my nation.
So, I want you to join me this year in giving voice to, and taking action for, generating the wealth you desire and doing so unapologetically.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m proud that I’m taking the necessary steps to pursue wealth so that I can advance the ideals and dreams that are important, strive to be financially secure, and flip this inequality thing on its head.
If we wait for someone else to do it for us, we will have missed the boat. We have to embrace an attitude of getting what’s ours – I deserve it. Don’t you?
2018 is the year of “Owning It”
Own your shortcomings.
Own your purpose.
Own your pursuit of wealth.
Own it all.
Pursuing wealth is worth pursuing because you deserve to benefit from it. I’m not saying to be consumed by materialism or to use your wealth to put down others. Just the opposite – use your wealth as a tool to bring forward the change you want to see.
I’ll leave you with this quote from Dr. King from his address, “Three Evils of Society,” which was delivered at the National Conference on New Politics on August 31, 1967, and still rings true today:
“It is this moral lag in our thing-oriented society that blinds us to the human reality around us and encourages us in the greed and exploitation which creates the sector of poverty in the midst of wealth. Again we have diluted ourselves into believing the myth that Capitalism grew and prospered out of the protestant ethic of hard word and sacrifice, the fact is that Capitalism was build on the exploitation and suffering of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor – both black and white, both here and abroad. If Negroes and poor whites do not participate in the free flow of wealth within our economy, they will forever be poor, giving their energies, their talents and their limited funds to the consumer market but reaping few benefits and services in return.
